Knitwits & Crafty Stitchers

We put Galway yarn shop Knitwits & Crafty Stitchers in the spotlight and hear from owner Kathryn O’Toole

Tell us a little bit about your shop?

We are based on the outskirts of Galway City – Liosban Business Park to be exact, which is about a 30 minute walk from Eyre Square. There is also a regular bus service that services the area. We are open three and a half years and have grown steadily in that time. We open Monday to Friday 10 to 6 and on Saturdays we open 10 to 4.

What brands of yarn do you stock?

We stock a wide range of brands, including King Cole, Stylecraft, Rico, James C.Brett, Designer yarns, Debbie Bliss, Lousia Harding, Juniper Moon Farm, Drops, Studio Donegal, Ella Rae, Caron, Bernat, Wendy, Robin and Peterpan.

What are your top selling yarns?

Stylecraft Special DK, King Cole Drifter Chunky, James C.Brett Flutterby and DY Aran with wool 400g.

What’s your most popular pattern?

Pattern popularity tends to be seasonal.

Do you have a knitting group in your shop?

No, but there are a lot of local knitting groups in the area.

Who’s your typical customer?

Our typical customers tend to be ladies aged 25 to 45;  that’s not to say we don’t get men in the shop, there are quite a few male knitters around.

Do you get involved with any charity knitting projects?

Yes, we usually have a day for the Big Knit and this year we hosted it on local yarn shop day 6th May.

Do you stock any local designers, yarn producers or independent dyers?

Currently we don’t as there doesn’t seem to be an appetite for them in our area.

Do you stock other crafts accessories?

Well we have a full range of knitting and crochet tools and we also stock quilting tools and fabrics, basic fabrics for crafts and dressmaking, embroidery threads, ribbons, buttons and anything to do with needle craft in general.
