Books in Review – Modern Crocheted Blankets, Throws and Cushions

Our bookshelves are groaning under the weight of all the crafty publications we own, but that doesn’t stop us from adding to the collection.  Recently, we received a copy of Modern Crocheted Blankets, Throws and Cushions: 35 colourful, cosy and comfortable patterns byLaura Strutt to review and who doesn’t like colourful crochet?

Modern Crocheted Blankets, Throws and Cushions is the 5th book from Laura Strutt.  A passionate textile designer, Laura is multi-craftual, enjoying all aspects of sewing, weaving, crochet, knitting and thoroughly enjoys adding a handmade touch to everyday life.

With 35 patterns in total, Laura’s latest book is packed full of colourful stylish home accessories.  Blankets, throws and cushions are a great way of injecting colour and a sense of your own style into your home and Laura has made doing this easily achievable.

Separated by colour schemes, Laura has chosen to group her designs into those that are Bright & Beautiful, Warm & Rich and Neutral and Natural.  The colours Laura has used serve as a guide for those of us that might be a little wary of colour, but there is always room to personalise your project and go for something completely different.

The patterns have all been written using English crochet terminology and the yarns used in the samples are easily accessible and in the main, sold worldwide.  If you should encounter problems sourcing a specific brand, finding a suitable alternative should be easy.

The instructions are clearly laid out and easy to follow, Laura has also given each a skill rating, making it easier to match an appropriate project to your crocheting ability.   If you’re a little unsure about something, there is a handy technique section at the back of the book to help you.

The fact that we’re both knitters is pretty well known, however that doesn’t mean we’re not still partial to a little crochet.  Given some time, maybe lots of time, colourful yarn and a hook, we’d be tempted to give several of the projects in MCBTC a go.

The Sunburst Squares Blanket with it’s colourful granny square motif is such a classic make.  Using the join as you go method of construction, it does away with a fair portion of the sewing required to complete it too.

We all know mandalas are magic – right?  So it stands to reason that the colourful, boho style All the Colours Mandala Cushion was going to catch our eye.  Laura has used Cascade 220 and a 5.5mm crochet hook for her sample, which means it will fly up in next to no time.  It is also a great project for a bit of stash busting.

Granny striped chevrons rock in the Winter Pansies Blanket, for which Laura has used warm shades of teal, lilac, magenta and Aqua combined with white.  We can picture it looking beautiful in natural sheep shades of greys, charcoal and ecru.

Last but not least, we’re drawn to the combination of triangles and squares in the Sea At Night Blanket.  Worked up using shades of blue and grey, the geometric shapes combine to make a striking blanket, great for snuggling up under.

Modern Crocheted Blankets, Throws and Cushions is published by CICO Books, costs £12.99 and is available from all good book and craft shops.  It’s a great book for crocheters of all abilities and would be a welcome addition to the library of all, particularly those with a yarn stash that needs using.  If you’re still a little undecided whether it’s for you or a loved one, we’re thrilled to reveal that we’ll be publishing one of the designs from the book in the forthcoming Midwinter Night Issue.
