LYS in the Spotlight

Carlow Fabric & Crafts

We put Carlow Fabric & Crafts shop in the spotlight.

Tell us a little bit about your shop?

Carlow Fabric & Crafts is based in Haddens Carpark in Carlow town.  Originally the shop was opened by a friend of mine just two and a half years ago.  I became a partner in the business and in September 2017, I took over the shop completely and am now the full owner.

Our opening hours are 9.30 to 5.30 Monday to Friday and we give ourselves an extra half an hour in bed on Saturdays, opening at 10.  We’re closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Why a Fabric and Craft Shop?

My mother taught me to knit before I started school, there was often an odd hole here and there, but I soon got the hang of it.  I’ve been sewing since I started school and had great teachers all the way through Primary and Secondary school for both Crafts and Home Economics.  On leaving school, I became a chef and remained in the industry for over 30 years.  I always loved knitting, crochet, sewing painting and craft and would have worked as a tutor with the Education and Training Board for a number of years, teaching cookery and craft.

What brands of yarn do you stock?

We stock Stylecraft and Rico Design yarns and a wide selection of dress fabrics including wool, cotton, linens, fleeces and lace.  Our range of Quilting fabrics include ranges from Lewis and Irene and the popular Nutex ranges. To complement our range of fabrics we sell Burda and Simplicity dressmaking patterns, as well as a large range of ribbons, lace trims, beads and general haberdashery including a generous number of buttons.

I love the quality of Irish Wool and hope to stock Studio Donegal Yarn in the near future.

What are your top selling yarns?

Our customers love Stylecraft’s Special DK because of the great range of colours available in the range.

What’s your most popular pattern?

Like the majority of yarn shops, our most popular knitting patterns would be for baby items.

Do you have a knitting group in your shop?

Unfortunately, I just don’t have space in the shop during opening hours to do so.  When the shop is closed I run several workshops and classes, including Beginners Crochet. Beginner Sewing, Dressmaking, Millinery, Hand Embroidery, Needle Felting and Mixed Media.

Who’s your typical customer?

Our typical customer ranges in age with an interest in dressmaking, knitting, crochet, patchwork or upcycling clothes.  Many of our customers are multicraftual and are fond of more than one interest.

Are you on social media?

Yes, we’re on Facebook.
